King Kamali "The Road to be King"![]()
![]()
| Only a few bodybuilders have actually left enough of an impression on us to be remembered for any extent. Just grab a five-to-10-year-old issue of IRONMAN, thumb through it, and you’re bound to find a familiar face here and there that you haven’t seen or heard anything about for many moons.
The reasons so many bodybuilders are missing in action are probably countless, but the most prevailing one is most likely the fact that only a few professional bodybuilders have the charisma and personality to shine above the rest. I’ll place my money on Shari “King” Kamali as being a name that won’t soon be forgotten.
Kamali’s new, and first, video, “The Road to be King,” allows him to shine brightly. He briefly tells his story of growing up and getting involved in bodybuilding and uses the rest of the hour-long tape to illustrate his preparations for his 2001 pro debut at the IRONMAN Pro Invitational and Arnold Classic.
It’s evident that King plans to be around for a while and will easily make a name for himself in the sport—his impressive placings at his first pro shows foreshadow the great things to come.
The video covers King’s progress in two-week intervals, starting from eight weeks out from the IRONMAN and ending at four weeks out. He gives his motivation, diet and supplement secrets, as well as interesting insight into the way you feel vs. the way you look, and the roles that genetics and names, a.k.a. politics, play in the sport.
Most pro bodybuilders’ tapes simply show them training and only occasionally talking. King, on the other hand, speaks—either directly or by voice over—through most of his tape, and the great thing about it is, you don’t mind listening. He comes across as an intelligent bodybuilder, he’s got charisma and he’s a hell of performer. That all adds up to something that’s been missing in bodybuilding for a long time—someone to stir up the pot.
